Abstract Based on the analysis of phytoplankton samples collected 10–16 July 1996 at 16 stations throughout Kongsfjorden, a list of ca 40 algal species is given, and the phytoplankton and chlorophyll a fluorescence spatial distribution is discussed. Data on the abundance of larger nanoplankton (> 5 εm) and microphytoplankton (> 20 urn) from 7 stations are presented. The total number of algal cells (TNC), the abundance of the most frequent species (the chrysophytc Dinobryon balticum), and that of dinoflagellates and their correlation with fluorescence intensity are considered separately. High positive correlation coefficient was calculated for TNC for all 7 stations. The dinofiagellate abundance showed high positive correlation with fluorescence at 2 stations in the innermost fjord, close to the glacier, due to Gymnodinium sp. At the remaining 5 stations, negative correlation between dinoflagellates and fluorescence was calculated.
