Event and fault diagnosis

The power of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems employed in electrical power systems has continuously increased since their initial introduction. Together with the advances in computing power available at system control centres, the effect of this has been a significant increase in the volume of data presented to system operators. In certain instances, control centre staff have failed to keep track of the interpretation of system conditions following faults. There is a recognized need to provide on-line aids to the interpretation of SCADA system data, such as event and fault diagnosis systems. Event and fault diagnosis is closely related to alarm processing, with the distinction lying mainly in the shallower depth to which the analysis is performed for alarm processing.
