Predicting the Cutting Conditions at which Built-Up Edge Disappears when Machining Plain Carbon Steels

Summary A brief description is given of an approximate machining theory in which account is taken of the temperature and strain-rate dependent work material properties. It is shown how the temperature and strain-rate conditions at the tool/chip interface calculated from this theory can be used in conjunction with the flow stress properties of the work material to predict the values of cutting speed and feed at which built-up edge disappears. Excellent agreement is shown between predicted and experimental results.
