Numerical stability of the error diffusion concept

Abstract The error diffusion algorithm is an easy implementable mean to handle nonlinearities in signal processing, e.g. in picture binarization and coding of diffractive elements. The numerical stability of the algorithm depends on the choice of the diffusion weights. A criterion for the stability of the algorithm is presented and evaluated for some examples.
