A method for analyzing response of buried pipeline due to earthquake fault movement

An analysis method is proposed for the response of a buried pipeline due to earthquake fault movement in this paper based on the L.R.L's method. The Newmark-Hall method and Kennedy method can be regarded as the special cases of this method. A dimensionless parameterΘ is defined to represent the ratio of the axial strain to the bending strain in the pipe cross section, which is a function of the fault movement, cross angle of pipeline and fault plane, pipe diameter and thickness, soil friction angle. The calculating and analyzing results show that the axial strain plays a major role in pipeline response when the dimensionless parameterΘ varies in a range, and the bending strain plays a major role when the dimensionless parameterΘ varies in another range.
