Evaluation of rational industrial solid waste abatement in China

Industrial Solid Waste (ISW) abatement is attracting wide attention, with its generation increasing rapidly in China. In this paper, we calculate the ISW rational abatement ratio (IRAR) of 30 regions in China from 1990 to 2005, by applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Results show that, the Eastern, Central and Western areas have the lowest, medium and highest 1990?2005 average IRAR (15.04%, 40.27% and 58.83%), respectively. Chinese government should emphasise particularly on ISW abatement in central and western area; and more investment in ISW management and introducing advanced technology are the urgent tasks to improve ISW efficiency.
