Battle of Seattle

In the “Battle of Seattle” tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of that city to oppose the “Millennium Round” of trade talks of the World Trade Organization (WTO) starting November 30, 1999. The talks ended in failure partly because of the protests, but largely because of opposition within the meetings from governments opposed to backroom deals made between the United States, Canada, the European Union, and Japan (Smith 2002: 208).
