A new form of mixed construction, using structural steel beams to couple reinforced concrete walls, is proposed as an alternative seismic lateral load resisting system. iShear criticali steel coupling beams are proposed as an alternative to diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams and iflexure criticali steel beams are proposed in lieu of conventionally reinforced concrete coupling beams. Design and detailing procedures for the steel coupling beams and their embedments in the concrete walls are presented. The results of full-scale, reversed cyclic loading tests of portions of walls coupled with steel beams are presented. The responses of the steel coupling beams are compared with those of diagonally and conventionally reinforced concrete coupling beams. Des poutres de « cisaillement critique » en acier sont proposOes comme une alternative aux poutres de couplage en bOton diagonalement armOes, alors que des poutres de « flexion critique » en acier sont proposOes au lieu des poutres de couplage en bOton conventionnellement armOes. Les Otapes de conception et de calculs pour ces poutres de couplage en acier et leur encastrement dans les murs de bOton sont prOsentOes. Les rOsultats diessais ‡ liOchelle avec chargement cyclique inverse appliquO sur des portions de msrs couplOes ‡ liaide de poutres en acier, sont prOsentOs. Les rOponses des poutres de couplage en acier sont comparOes avec celles des poutres de couplage en bOton armOes conventionnellement ou diagonalement.
