A review of the use of risk factor modification in the management of atherosclerotic arterial disease

ConclusionsBased on current knowledge, it appears that atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease. There are differences in the effects of atherosclerotic risk factors between the various vascular beds. More than one risk factor is found in the majority of the patients and, often there is atherosclerotic involvement of several vascular territories. In order to prevent or retard atherosclerotic complications and improve patient survival, it is prudent that all the major modifiable risk factors should be corrected in patients with cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular disease.
