Response spectra design methods for tuned equipment-structure systems

Abstract A description is given of a design method that allows response spectra to be used to estimate maximum displacements and accelerations in equipment-structure systems. The type of system considered involves light equipment tuned to a natural frequency of the structure. The solution is developed by using transform methods, residue theory and asymptotic analysis. A very simple result is obtained which should be of value to designers of equipment, equipment mountings and non-structural components in structures subject to dynamic loading. The simple nature of the result is explained by a direct physical interpretation of the response.
