An update on the OpenOrbiter I mission

The OpenOrbiter I spacecraft is a technology demonstrator for a very low-cost CubeSat bus and set of core subsystems. Using primarily commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, the Open Prototype for Educational NanoSats (OPEN) is a set of designs and documentation that educational institutions, businesses and others world-wide can use to make a satellite with a parts cost of under $2,000. The OpenOrbiter I mission is demonstrating the efficacy and characterizing the performance of the OPEN framework. This basic design is a 1-U (10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm) CubeSat. It includes a P-POD / NanoRacks CubeSat Deployer compliant structure. It also includes core electronic systems (including a flight computer, electric power system, radio, and attitude determination and control system) and an (optional) payload computer board. Power generation is provided by solar panels the cover five of the six faces of the CubeSat. This paper presents an overview of the OpenOrbiter mission.
