Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, has formulated two-dimensional finite-element models that satisfactorily represent the transient thermal and mechanical stress patterns occurring during the cooling of a butt weld produced by the submerged-arc welding of a heat-treated HT-36 steel alloy. The models offer a means of understanding the thermo-mechanical response caused by welding under various conditions without requiring the use of complex three-dimensional calculations.
