Abstract To study gas-liquid two-phase four quadrants operating characteristics of CAP1400 nuclear main pump, the theoretical basis of the pump’s four-quadrant experiment is briefly analyzed in the manuscript, and the requirements and notes on gas-liquid four-quadrant experiment are detailed. Based on the four-quadrant characteristic curves of nuclear main pump forecasted by CFD, auxiliary pumps for the experiment are selected, the math model to transfer gas in tubes is built, the size of the gas tank is determined, and the CAP1400 nuclear main pump’s four-quadrant characteristic curves are obtained by completing gas-liquid two-phase four quadrants experiment with gas content of 10%, 20% and 30%. The experimental data show: under foreward working condition, when the flow is negative, the head of the pump is proportional to the first power of the flow, and when the flow is positive, the head of the pump is proportional to the second power of the flow; under reversal condition, in full power area the pump head is proportional to the third power of the flow; under zero torque condition, when the flow is reverse, the head of the pump is proportional to the second power of the flow, and when the flow is positive, the head of the pump is proportional to the first power of the flow; under shaft block condition, the head of the pump is proportional to the second power of the flow.
