LANDFILL LEACHATES PRETREATMENT BY OZONATION

In this paper, the application of ozonation processes for stabilized landfill leachate treatment was investigated. The leachate came from a municipal sanitary landfill located nearby Bielsk Podlaski. The average values of its main parameters were: pH 8.32; COD 870 mgO2/dm 3; BOD 90 mgO2/dm 3; NH4 + 136.2 mgN/dm3; UV254 absorbance 0.312 and turbidity 14 NTU. The ozone dosages used were in the range of 115.5 to 808.5 mgO3/dm 3 of the leachate. The maximum COD, color and UV254 absorbance removal was respectively 37.3%; 81.6% and 59.2% by applying a high ozone dose of 808.5 mgO3/dm 3. After oxidation, the ratio of BOD/COD was increased from 0.1 up to 0.23.
