STABILITY AND BIFURCATION IN GEOMECHANICS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

The concepts of stability and bifurcation in geomechanics are illustrated by discussing the two most typical failure mechanisms occurring in soil bodies, namely shear banding and liquefaction. For the sake of simplicity the analysis is done on the basis of a two-dimensional flow theory of plasticity for frictional and dilatant granular materials. (Author/TRRL)
