A SOFT OUTPUT VITERBI ALGORITHM (SOVA) DEMODULATOR FOR PRE-CODED BINARY CPM SIGNALS

A soft output demodulator based on the Viterbi algorithm is presented for a binary pre-coded continuous phase modulation communication system. This soft output demodulator is as simple to implement as the Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) demodulator but requires less storage elements. Simulation results for a rate Ω convolution-coded GMSK signal with Viterbi decoding show that this demodulator can provide a 2 to 2.5 dB advantage over that of hard decision decoding using the MLSE demodulator.
