Relationship of cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis to recovery of ECHO 9 virus.

A SMALL NUMRER of the patients with meningitis caused by enteric cytopathogenic human orphan (ECHO) 9 virus studied in this clinic in 1958 were noted to have spinal fluid which was normal in all respects but from which the virus was isolated. Similar experiences have been recorded with the same disease by Sabin and coworkers and by McAllister and associates, and with infections of the nervous system caused by ECHO 6, Type 1 poliomyelitis, and Coxsackie A-9 viruses. The data obtained in 1958 were reexamined in an attempt to determine whether any factors which might be related to or responsible for this phenomenon could be demonstrated. It is the purpose of this communication to present the results of this analysis and to point out that there appeared to be an inverse relationship between the number of cells in the cerebrospinal fluid and the frequency with which ECHO 9 virus was
