On the Chlorophyll Content in the Surface Water of the Indian and the Antarctic Oceans

Recently, the amount of phytoplankton chlorophyll has been employed as an indicator of organic productivity in waters and its physiological background has also been scrutinized by many investigators. The chlorophyll in the ocean has, however, not yet been measured to any appreciable degree except in some restricted regions, thereby making it quite difficult at present to obtain any satisfactory information on its geographical distribution. In 1960-1961, the junior author participated in the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. He made preparations for chlorophyll measurement. After the cruise the senior author performed the chlorophyll measurement. The present paper deals with this result to fill up some gaps in respect to the chlorophyll distribution in the Indian and the Antarctic Oceans.
