Outline of the WEGA Large Wind Turbine Programme

Within the context of the continuing development of large wind turbine technology the WEGA turbines can be regarded as the ‘second generation’ of large experimental machines. Designed in the years 1984 to 1986, they built upon experience gained from the ‘first generation’ of large experimental machines which were erected in the early eighties. The MOD-1 and MOD-2 (USA), GROWIAN (DE) and Nibe (DK) are examples of these. The common intention of the designers of the WEGA turbines was to use the lessons learnt from the building and operation of these first large machines but to combine this with the experience which had emerged from the successful development of the first small commercial wind turbines. In this way the technology would proceed one step further in the process of the commercialisation of wind turbines in the megawatt class.
