Real and Reactive Power-System Security Dispatch Using a Variable Weights Optimization Method

A Variable Weights method for the solution of the optimal load flow problem is presented. The method takes advantage of the mild nonlinearities of the problem in attempting to change the weights of the constrained quantities in such a way so as to both alleviate the current overloads and avoid the creation of new ones due to the change of the controls. The method is used to solve the IEEE 118 bus test system (53 generators) and it is shown to converge with as many as 37 overloads for the real problem and 26 overloads for the reactive problem.
