Correcting the safety and health problems in coal preparation plants involves many different specialties, due to the varied nature of the operations within the plant. Field experience and accident statistical data show that most of the accidents that occur in coal preparation plants fall into a general categories, namely {open_quotes}Handling of Materials,{close_quotes} {open_quotes}Working with Hand Tools,{close_quotes} {open_quotes}Powered Haulage,{close_quotes} {open_quotes}Machinery,{close_quotes} and {open_quotes}Slips and Falls.{close_quotes} These accidents can only be minimized by continually emphasizing task training and the awareness of the dangers of each operation. This paper looks at six specific technical categories and the health and safety problems encountered around coal preparation facilities related to each. Simple recommendations for improving safety are included with each section.
