Fast Decision Algorithm for Intra Mode in Depth Map of 3D-HEVC

As an extension of High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC), 3D-HEVC has a good effect on the synthesis point of view, but in order to ensure the coding quality of depth map, the added DMMs makes it have extremely high coding complexity. In this paper, a fast decision algorithm for intra mode of depth map based on edge detection is proposed. Firstly, the Roberts operator is used for edge detection to determine whether the DMMs needs to be traversed. Then, according to the RMD results, the traversal numbers of wedgelet patterns is greatly reduced by the method of classification and partition. The experimental results show that, compared with HTM-16.2, the proposed algorithm saves 35.4% of the encoding time of depth map and only increases 1.06% of BDBR in the All-intra mode, and the loss of encoding efficiency can be ignored.
