Cherenkov detectors for the measurement of reactor power

Abstract Devices to measure the Cherenkov radiation from a water cooled reactor core and from the N16 activity in the coolant water are described. The two systems are assessed as power monitors. The reactor core detector provides an alternative to the conventional ionization chamber for a reactor shut-down device. The N16 detector provides a sensitive wide range power monitor which is independent of core configuration and burn-up.
