The N.I.M.R. hybrid computer system consisting of a TR48 analogue computer, DDP 516 digital computer with 8K of store and an interface with analogue/digital and digital/analogue conversion was intended for experimental computing with two main areas of application, simulation and on-line to experiments. For the simulation of biomedical systems, the models first need to be established and at this conceptual stage some interaction by the research worker with the computation is required. Thus immediately meaningful visual displays were needed which were also necessary for the on-line applications. This led to the development of a program for coordinate plotting which could provide displays in two dimensions on to a cathode ray tube or x-y recorder.
