Hyperbilirubinemia and ABO Hemolytic Disease in Newborn Infants of Diabetic Mothers

In 29 consecutive cases of newborn infants of diabetic mothers, the serum bilirubin levels during the neonatal period have been studied. These infants are predisposed to the development of hyperbilirubinemia. The average bilirubin levels for the group exceeded those of normal newborn infants. In the majority of these infants, hemolytic disease or other causes of jaundice could be excluded. The hyperbilirubinemia was considered to be the result of functional immaturity of the liver.
