Tri-dimensional eccentricity model of a rod lip seal

Abstract In this work, an analytical tri-dimensional eccentricity model of a rod lip seal is presented. In the specific, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) rod lip seal was considered. The analytical model was completed and adjusted by means of numerical results. Experimental tests on selected seals were carried out on a suitable test rig designed to measure reaction forces on seals as a function of rod misalignment. A cross validation between the analytical model and experimental results is provided. The model is used to calculate the contact force distribution on a seal when it is subjected to an eccentric mounting.
