General Design of Automatic Vehicle License-Plate Recognition System and Its Software Structure

In this article, the realtime image acquisition system using digital video camera, image acquisition card and microcomputer is introduced. An automatic automobile licenseplate recognition system using image processing technology, pattern recognition and visual C++ programing language is developed. A method for finding the position of licenceplate from the original image and separating the characters from licenceplate using grayscale histogram is given. By means of the mixed characteristic extraction method for extracting the boundary toplogical features of the licenceplate characters and comparing and matching with the characters template, the licenceplate numbers can be identified.
