Longitudinal deck girders do not contribute their full capacity to the strength of an open ship subjected to longitudinal bending. The proportion of their strength that is effective in way of the maximum bending moment depends on the shape of the moment curve. Calculations of this effect are reproduced and discussed for a typical container ship of length 170m, breadth 28.4m, depth 15.5m and draught 9.5m.
