Implementation of a multichannel decision feedback equalizer for shallow water acoustic telemetry using a stabilized fast transversal filters algorithm

This paper describes a multichannel decision feedback equalizer (DFE) receiver for real-time underwater acoustic telemetry, which is a modified version of a jointly adaptive DFE-digital phase locked loop structure first proposed by Stojanovic et al. (1993). The receiver uses a stabilized fast transversal filters (SFTF) algorithm to implement RLS adaptation. The O(N) computational burden of the SFTF, compared with the O(N/sup 2/) burden of an RLS algorithm, allows the receiver to run in real-time, at reasonable cost, using commercially available digital signal processors. Detection performance of the receiver is presented for field test data from shallow water and deep water sites.
