A pilot study in the use of ultrasonic cleaning in textile conservation

SEM micrographs illustrate the consequence of using ultrasonic cleaning of unsupported degraded linen fibre in aqueous washing solution. In IMS or IMS/CC14 only minimal damage was caused. Surprisingly, little damage was caused to a compact degraded fibre. It is considered that more experiments on cleaning in organic solvents could prove useful in practice. B/W SEM micro graphs, references and materials.
