PREDICTION OF VIBRATIONS AND STRUCTURE-BORNE NOISE FROM RAILWAYS

In Denmark - as well as in the rest of Scandinavia - no official code has yet been released for prediction of perceptible vibrations and structure-borne noise transmitted from railway lines. Therefore, as part of the planning of a new 64 km high-speed railway line in the Copenhagen area, a prediction model developed by Ingemansson Technology was adapted in order to predict the number of residences influenced by vibrations and structure-borne noise. The primary elements in the methodology were: (1) A semi-analytical model based on literature and experience, covering parameters such as train speed, track type and building construction; (2) Source strength measurements covering passenger trains at 200 km/h and freight trains at typical speeds; (3) Transmission measurements from the track side to the inside of typical residences; and (4) A systematic procedure to enumerate the influenced residences along the track, based on a national registration database of buildings. This paper covers one of the derived problems involved in interpreting the uncertainty of the results. For the covering abstract see IRRD E104312.
