Don’t Sweat It: Mobile Instruments for Clinical Diagnosis

This paper presents the development of a mobile closed chamber skin barrier function analyser for dermatological and cosmetic applications. Skin barrier function is evaluated by the measurement of Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). A closed chamber analyser design was chosen for its improved ability to limit environmental interference compared to open chamber devices. Theoretical and practical experiments are presented to demonstrate different methods of TEWL computations. Finally, the accuracy of the device is compared with existing instruments to highlight the importance of TEWL calculation optimisation. Calibration studies are ongoing.
