Personal Construct Theory I N the Measurement of Environmental Images

more important, an essential first stage in the development of a theory relating human behaviour and the environment. In a previous paper (garrison and Sarre, 1971) we put forward the view that techniques for measuring these images of the environment should be developed not on an ad hoc basis, but in the context of psychometric theory, and should relate to an established theory of mental structure and process. Personal Construct Theory and its associated repertory grid test were suggested as being potentially useful both for measuring and understanding images. The present paper assesses the usefulness of the repertory grid in measuring the environmental images held by two different groups of urban residents. In the first study, interest was focussed on the general image of their urban environment held by a group of female city residents. In the
