Loss analysis and control for power distribution network

This paper summarizes the current progresses achieved in loss analysis and operation optimization of MV and LV distribution network from three aspects: the theoretic line loss algorithm, the operation optimization measures based on loss minimization and the line loss management. Seeing that the theoretical line loss calculation is the foundation of the economic operation of distribution network, enhancement in loss algorithms is emphatically discussed, including the development in traditional algorithms; the improved Backward/Forward load flow algorithm; the application of maximal network flow and the application of artificial neural network (ANN) in loss calculation of MV distribution network. Then the feasible loss control means are analyzed from both technical and management viewpoints. The problems unresolved in this area are pointed out in the end of the paper.
