A fuel cell stack has a large number of long and narrow channels for reactant gases and coolant. If these channels are modeled by conventional CFD methods, the memory and time required to solve the fluid dynamics and performance of a fuel cell stack become impractically large. Image processing techniques have been introduced to generate a simplified model of the flow channels, resulting in significantly reduced solving times. This novel modeling method enables the numerical analysis of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and performance estimation of a whole fuel cell stack composed of more than 300 cells. The results of this research will be used to determine design parameters and operating conditions of fuel cell stacks.
