Operations at a deep relief well

Relief wells are becoming a practical alternative in well control. By careful positioning, operators can take advantage of regional drift tendencies. Conventional magnetics prove to be as reliable as gyroscopic surveys, and a new interpretive technique allows accurate prediction of intercept point. This article chronicles relief well operations at the TXO Marshall, located in Leon County, Texas. Operations there resulted in the second deepest wellbore intercept in the history of the industry. Magnetic multishot, magnetic single shot, gyroscopic and MWD data are compared, and the results are presented. Reliability and repeatability of directional surveys are discussed, and borehole proximity technology and advances in that technology are addressed.
