Analysis of Space-Time Codes using Serial Concatenation

Analytical expressions giving the performance of serially concatenated space-time codes are provided. These expressions lead to guidelines for achieving large gains through serial concatenation for space-time codes in wireless fading channels. They are similar to guidelines previously developed for regular convolutional codes in additive Gaussian noise channels. However, the justiication for these guidelines are not a direct extension of those previous results. The performance of two example serially concatenated space-time codes (SCSTC) is analyzed numerically. One code is designed for a quasi-static fading channel, the other for a fast fading channel. Simulation results show agreement with the guidelines provided. An iterative decoding scheme is used at the receiver. For applications which can tolerate delay, signiicant gain can be achieved with the proposed approach.
