Methods of microbial identification, tracking and monitoring of function

Abstract The use of specific biomarkers for the identification and tracking of microorganisms in the environment is about to come of age. Exciting progress has been made in measuring microbial function and activity in environmental samples. A significant advance is that a variety of recent studies have correlated the genetic and chemical profiles of microbial communities with population structure and function.
