The future of offshore wind turbines

Limited onshore area in Europe and the increasing demand for clean energy are motivations to harvest more from offshore turbines by installing them as power plants and making them larger. This research deals with the second, making turbines larger, and it looks toward the problems associated with the size increment and find solutions for them. The focus is toward better understanding of the structural dynamics characteristics of larger offshore wind turbines but also manufacturing, transportation and installation are taken into account. The outcome of the project is the stepping stone toward larger multi megawatt offshore wind turbines or possibly the identification of the bottleneck that will impede further growth in size.
