Note on the theory of the rotatory dispersion of crystals

The formula which has been proposed by Chandrasekhar to express the dependence of the rotatory power on wavelength is given. This quadratic formula was previously derived for crystals with space group of symmetry D43 or its enantiomorphous D63. However, Chandrasekhar and other authors have shown that this formula may be used also for crystals which belong to other groups of symmetry. In this paper we have removed certain simplifying assumptions of Chandrasekhar's model and in this case obtain a more general formula. Only in the special case where Ki(2) = 0, that is in the case of the equality of oscillator strengths of both normal modes of vibrations, we obtain Chandrasekhar's formula. The applicability of our equation to known cases is discussed.
