AIR POLLUTION IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF ROADS - A REVISED UK APPROACH

During the early 1980s, TRL was instrumental in developing of a simple air pollution assessment tool. This original methodology has been regularly improved and extended and is now published within the UK Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, The latest revision was undertaken at the end of 1998 early 1999 and incorporates the most recent EU data on vehicle emissions and information on pollutant formation, dispersion and air quality standards. This methodology is a prerequisite for application to all road developments in the UK and although developed specifically for the UK is easily transferable to other regions. This paper will discuss the assumptions and simplifications contained within the methodology and assess its accuracy for the determination of air pollution impacts from roads.
