Design of a Single-Phase Isolated SEPIC-Based Charger for Electric Vehicles

The electrification of the transportation sector has been developing very fast in recent years as a green solution. This paper presents a unidirectional single-phase on-board charger for Electric Vehicles. The Power Factor Correction (PFC) capabilities of isolated SEPIC DC-DC converter are reviewed and tested. The converter has been evaluated for both Continuous and Discontinuous Conduction Modes (CCM and DCM). MATLAB/Simulink platform has been employed to validate the presented concept. Simulation results show an input current THD of 0.8% in CCM and 2.7% in DCM, and an almost unity Power Factor (PF) in both modes.
