T E X Programming

In the first eleven chapters of this book we encountered numerous macros, and even created some, always more or less informally. It is now time to be a bit more systematic, and cover the basics of TEX programming. Our study will by no means be exhaustive—a whole separate book could be written on the subject—but we hope by the end of the chapter you’ll have a solid understanding of what a macro is and of what happens when TEX stores a macro and when it uses it.
