Bridge Principles in an Abridged Reply to Goodman.

RESPONDS TO GOODMAN'S REACTION to Mosenthal's article, "Psycholinguistic properties of aural and visual comprehension as determined by children's abilities to comprehend syllogisms" (RRQ, Vol. XII, No. 1, pp. 55-92). Argues that original Mosenthal article questioned how Goodman arrives at his data. This concern is discussed as "bridge principles" as opposed to "internal principles." Contends that Goodman's bridge principles are based on Chomsky's Aspects (1965) and that Chomsky's theory has been invalidated in several respects; thus Goodman's bridge principles are invalid. Also argues that-unlike Chomsky and generative linguists-Goodman has followed the procedures of structural linguists in building his model. 1) First reviews the concepts "theory," "taxonomy," "model," and "inventory"; 2) next analyzes Goodman's paradigm according to the specification of these terms; 3) then summarizes Chomsky's Aspects theory, contrasting it to the procedures of structuralists; 4) discusses how Chomsky's theory serves as model for Goodman's bridge principles; and 5) reviews Chomsky's internal principles and Goodman's bridge principles in the light of several linguistic and psychological paradigms, contending that these paradigms invalidate the principles of Chomsky and Goodman.
