Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for the Phenotypic Traits in Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

The evaluation of phenotypic variability, heritability and genetic advance fourteen advanced varietal lines of sesame genotypes were grown during kharif 2015-16 at the Project Coordinating Unit Sesame and Niger, JNKVV, Jabalpur. High values for phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was recorded seed yield per plant (g) followed by number of primary branches per plant, oil content and seeds per capsuleand hence improvement through selection could be possible. High heritability was recorded for seeds per capsule followed by oil content, yield per plant, harvest index, days to 50% flowering, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, plant height, days to maturity, capsule length, 1000-seed weight and number of capsules per plant. High heritability combined with high genetic advance was recorded for seeds per capsule followed by oil content, yield per plant, harvest index, days to 50% flowering, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, plant height, days to maturity, capsule length, 1000-seed weight and number of capsules per plant indicating that selection of these characters would be effective for further breeding purpose
