Modeling slotted WDM rings with discrete-time Markovian models

Abstract An approximate discrete-time Markov chain model is developed for an all-optical WDM ring in which users transmit fixed-length packets (or cells) according to the SRR (Synchronous Round Robin) medium access control protocol. The model steady-state solution allows the computation of the traditional performance parameters of interest, i.e., through-puts and average delays, for packets referring to specific source–destination pairs. The comparison of the model results with the outputs of a detailed simulator shows that the two different approaches provide very similar forecasts about the network performance parameters. This indicates that traditional modeling approaches can offer important contributions in the design of modern high-speed networks.
