Roof covers are needed to protect the complex shape such as pantograph and insulators. However, they affect the flow around the upper part of the train and change the aerodynamic drag of the train. In this study, the flow around the upper part of the train is analyzed and the aerodynamic drag variation is investigated by numerical simulation. The train model used for the numerical simulation is 6-car model of HEMU-430x, Korean Next Generation High speed train under development, which the roof covers are applied to. The flow around the roof cover is separated and induces the vortex which changes the flow as a result of numerical simulation. The vortices around the roof cover increase the aerodynamic drag of the whole train. The effects on the flow around the roof covers are changed by the location the roof covers.
