Though machines have yet to surpass human performance in pattern recognition, the variety of problems addressed is considerable. Machines have been used to recognize print and script, craters and clouds, fingerprints and jigsaw puzzles. In most cases, however, the technology has not advanced past laboratory models having quite limited performance.
