ASPECTS OF STALING IN LIQUID CULTURES OF FUNGI

Summary Criteria for assessing staling in liquid cultures of fungi are examined and assays based on the germinative capacity of culture filtrates are considered unsuitable for interpreting the capacity of the same filtrates to support mycelial growth. The interrelationships of nutrient level and growth inhibitors in staling systems are emphasized. The possible importance of both labile and stable metabolites is discussed in relation to staling phenomena.
