What Sort of Technology Permits the Language of Nature? Conditions for Controlling Nature-Domination Constitutionally

Economic developments since World War II have brought hitherto unknown wealth to the industrialized part of the world. In the meantime, enthusiasm for scientific and technological achievements has given way to the consciousness that other qualities of life have to be sacrificed if those achievements are to be shared by everybody. If, for instance, everybody drives a car, then either traffic problems or their solutions have to be accepted — and both reduce the quality of urban life. And the diversity of nature has already been so severely diminished in congested industrial areas that only a concurrent degeneration of our perceptive faculties can limit our dismay.
